I'm sitting here nibbling some for lunch and I started thinking not about calories per ounce but about satiety per ounce, or per volume. What fills you up the most for the least weight and space in your pack?

Cashews. I can only eat so much cheese before I feel like I need a gallon of water. But alas, I only get cashews when my youngest son is nowhere around me!

Have you had Justin's nut butters? Higher in fat and lower in sugar than Nutella. They are pretty great, imo.

The double-chocolate says it's abotu 3 ozs, 380 calories; 19 g fat and 9 g protein; GMO- and soy-free; and wicked filling.

Oh yeah… they're good, too!

Porridge….

An ideal breakfast for many… but way too 'filling' for me…

Uh, this may sound odd but we're not talking calories but what satisfies us, right?
Well, nothing does the trick for me quite like a pot of tea. I use two lipton tea bags per quart of water for a good strong brew. Drink all that down and I'm refreshed, hydrated and not hungry anymore!

It doesn't get lighter than a tea bag!
Provided you can find the water somewhere and have the stove fuel to spare or don't mind making a tiny fire for a brewup.

Works on the trail and off. I just brewed another pot here at work…

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but it's….Cheetos! So light (in ounces) yet so heavy in your tummy…and they'd probably survive a nuclear apocalypse!

If we're talking "satisfies," rather than just blunts hunger, I'd have to vote oatmeal (with all the fixins) and second to that, a modest amount of peanut butter on bread. These seem to keep hunger at bay for quite awhile, and I don't have that sickish feeling that I get when I eat foods that are very high calorie dense. Many of the items mentioned above, I could not eat in sufficient quantity to get full, due to some inability to handle concentrated fats.

I gotta second the cashew suggestion. Actually, any good nut mix is awesome, as long as it's not TOO salty. I'm a vegan now, but, I will admit that I miss the days of my good old block of cheddar in my pack!

Nutritionally, fat has the highest satiety of the three macro groups. Notice most everything folks are saying are high in fat? Except porridge. But imagine eating the same sized bowl of porridge, except peanut butter. Unpossible, I'd say! Anyway, if you're looking for foods to fill you up, fat will always do the trick best.

Oh, and my answer is: salami and cheese.

@Bawana

You can make sun tea without heating up the water. Even easier. Cafeine is def. a way to dampen hunger and stimulate. But I can only handle it in the morning.

Salami. No contest.

Salami and cheese? Even better!

Of course, it's no mystery, as others said above. The fat+protein combo is particularly satiating. Nutritional scientists and regular Joe's alike have known this for many years. :)

"Cashews."

Nuts in general, I'd vote, with the satiety feeling in direct proportion to the fat content. But then there is personal taste to be factored in. My favorite in this regard are Trader Joes Honey Roasted Macadamias. They're just shy of 200 calories/oz and actually have a few grams of carbs thrown in, which supports the metabolization of the fat. TJ has a lot of other high fat options as well: candied pecans, candied walnuts, cinnamon almonds, coconut cashews, etc. All are pretty high calorie and with a bit of flavoring/sugar to vary the taste.
