I find that I hike very hot and that a 5.5 oz, zip-neck long sleeve fleece base layer over my hiking t-shirt, coupled with a .85 oz fleece beanie as needed, is all I need in the Sierras until the shoulder seasons. Good enough warmth and wind resistance for me while hiking. If it's cold enough when I stop hiking, I will throw on an ultralight hooded puffy and/or my rain shell.
Windshirts block the wind without holding in moisture. If you have never felt the need for such a garment, which is probably determined by the seasons/locations that you hike, that's totally ok, but no need to argue for 10 pages about it.
We all just over analyze everything. I have a houdini, i like it and use it, but still read every article and thread about wind shirts even though im happy. We just need to chillax, bro.
"Windshirts block the wind without holding in moisture."
Not all of them. Nivea sells a wind shirt that locks in moisture to counter the harmful effects of tanning salons and sun-drenched, romantic getaways. I have two, they're great.
The ratio of time spent posting to time spent actually hiking is pretty high around here, and it gets even worse during the winter.
Well my idea was transparency: Make test numbers available for air permeability and hydrostatic head for a decent selection of wind jackets/shirts, and everyone can choose what they think best fits their needs, hiking style, and conditions. The problem is that accurate data isn't currently available, except for a handful of garments.
The only windshirt I own is a supplex anorak I got from my high school swim team. 6 oz including handwarmer and kangaroo pockets plus a hood. The thing is a tank and refuses to die. I should probably send it to Zpacks or something and have Joe clone it for me in Pertex or something newfangled. I appreciate the drive to obtain accurate data, but it seems no one can agree how it translates to use, so I might as well stick with what I have.
