Tautline hitch or Adjustable Grip Hitch?

No, but it sure looks pretty cool. Its looks sort of like a mini-noose, so I can imagine it should stick well. Having been using a taut or a double two half hitch for ages, it'll be tough to try something new, but I'm up for it.

I prefer the adjustable grip hitch. I agree that it holds better, and I think it's marginally easier to tie as well. You can loop the end instead of pulling it through on the last step if you want to make it easier to untie.

Was playing around with this as well … think I recall it was harder to release though? Let me know how you guys fare with it. Will have to play around with it this weekend.

That looped end is clever. Very handy. I used the AGH to hang my food and the loop would have been ideal for untying.

I learned the adjustable grip hitch before the taut line hitch, so was wondering in the beginning why I would use the taut line hitch. Always nice to know extra knots but I try to keep it simple and use a couple with different functions that work well for me. Adjustable grip hitch is one of them.

Thanks for this, Delmar. Looks great and am adding this to trucker's, and figure-eight on my must-learn-and-add list for my small repertoire. I also have a very few that I use for everything, no matter what–square, first; tautline for almost everything else; bowline. Sometimes clove. (not counting shoelaces :)) The most help here, is making me think about the knot. I know tying the tautline I often can't remember if it's two-loops-in-one-out or vice versa; I just whip it out, and each works well enough. Adjustable Grip eliminates that choice!

A seperate loop at either the tarp/tent or peg end with a prussik knot or klemheist (french prussik) is another thing to try. Depending on your cordage, it can be quite neat and work very well. Can also be very fast and easy to adjust, and the knots tend to be quite stable over time once dressed nicely. I've never been a big fan of tautline (rolling) hitches. Especially packed away, they tend to be messy unless you are super neat with packing your shelter, and I end up having to undo them and the tangle and re-tie them all the time.

ProKnot has an app that is pretty good! I have it on my iPhone and practice while in camp….knots are fun. :-)

Only about a week ago one of the members here asked me what knots I used .
The taut line is one of them but also mentioned that I had found an easier alternative but forgot about how to do it sometime later and of course I had no idea what the name of the knot was.
The adjustable grip hitch was the one.
Now the purpose for me to try it was to see if it worked with the Dyneema only guylines (the Taut Line does not hold for me)but that i now also do not remember.
I'll try again.

I should add that it was an ipod program that brought the AGH to my attention. The app is called "Knots 3D," and it animates the tying procedures on scores of knots. I really like the app and recommend it.

Great tip! I've often mentally stumbled while tying the tautline hitch, but the adjustable grip hitch just flows! I've got 99 problems, but now a hitch ain't one!
