ive got both but wondering if i need both…the regular shirt is a patagonia windproof button up shirt that is pretty light and is stretchy(softshell?)…i like a shirt better than a zip up jacket.Of course a shirt doesnt have a hood and wind can get thru the button area.Just trying to figure out redundancy cuz usually i ll have my rainshell with me so if it gets real windy or i need a hood i am good.So much gear…

In the summer, I don't care that much about a hoody. I usually just wear some kind of baseball cap — mostly to keep the sun out of my eyes and to sop up sweat. The only time when I would prefer a hoody would be in a very strong wind that might blow the cap off.

In the winter, I like hoodies, mostly because they are so easy to flip up or down to suit without stopping to take the pack off or stow hats. I can wear a light beanie or balaclava and then flip the hoody up if I feel cold, flip it down if I'm overheating up top.

But, it's not a make or break deal. If I prefer a non-hoody top for the conditions, that's not the end of the world (unless it's raining/snowing…

Ummm, you don't need to wear the hood all the time :)

It's nice when you need it, can't blow away, get left at home or the last camp or buried in your pack.

I think that the Houdini's hood is so tightly tucked away, you wouldn't notice it wearing something over it.

There's times I want something more rain proof, but in that in-between area where the weather doesn't call for my rain gear, I like having the hood of the Houdini.

I've worn mine on the PCT & a cross country bike trip. Loved knowing it was there when I needed it.
