Looking for some advice:

I have an iphone 4 which I used on the PCT as my camera / video device. I am taking it again this year on the CDT, but am worried about running out of space since I would like to take more videos this time around. I ran out of space after about 2,000 miles on the PCT… I also had music, applications, etc on it. I had planned to upload / backup photos in town using google plus but the internet proved to be extremely slow in many places and it was difficult to do.

I also have a canon s100 camera. Bringing it with a wifi SD card for blog uploads would make running out of storage a non-issue, but I am not sure it is worth the 7 oz and having to worry about and charge another device.

Has anyone had success with a camera system for thru hiking and blog keeping? Either a good app for quick photo backup or recommending carrying a separate camera?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Bad Seed – Naturally Caffeinated here ! I bumped into you near Chester last year on the PCT while hiking with Golden Boy, Solstice, Lady X and some others. Think we hung out for a little bit at the Drakesbad Guest Ranch (you swam in the pool if I remember right). All the best on your CDT trip — and give a big HI to my buddy El Jeje — I dragged his butt out of Lone Pine with Trivia and Sheepdog, and enjoyed some great Sierra miles with him !

I used a SONY TX-10 camera with a 32 GB card and a backup battery. Charged it along with my headlamp and iPod touch on my MonoPrice battery backup (or use a Good solar charger). WORKED AWESOME and I used the SAME CAMERA to thru-hike the AT in 2011 so its gone almost 5,000 miles without issue. Good videos and lots of space on a 32GB card (can even bring more cards if you want).

My whole camera set-up was likely right about 8-9 ounces and fit in my front shoulder pocket for easy access and fast photo taking !!

Enjoy the CDT !!

You might look into Canon's SX series cameras; they're a larger pocket camera with lots of features, and they take AA batteries. Use lithium AAs, obviously (buy in bulk on Amazon or at Costco), and mail fresh ones with each resupply. Voila — no charging issues — ever. Yes, it's a bit more weight, but the ability to zoom, do sunset shots, timer shots, etc. will be a huge advantage for blogging, and memory size is a non-issue with a larger-MB SD card. I've found these cameras very convenient for traveling to developing nations (esp if you're in the backcountry) because you can buy AAs almost anywhere in the world.

…except for the ones that do not take AA batteries. Some do. Some don't.
