Planning on getting a Sawyer Mini. Are the sawyer bags still crappy? I know there was a lot of issues with leaks and such. Does the Mini fit Platypus bags or is it just easier to use a regular water or soda bottle?

The mini is still pretty new, so haven't field tested mine yet. All the reviews I came across when I researched it was that the bags are greatly improved. Although they still aren't meant for squeezing or abusing, and should only be rolled. I've ordered extra .5L (21g) and the 2L (38g) and they both come packaged in the same size box, so the 2L are folded the long way before they roll them and stuff them in the box. Seems odd they'd do that to the bags, but it is what it is. Haven't seen the 1L bag packaging yet.
The mini and bags are still standard pop-bottle threading, and Platy's never have been, but they "work" I guess. The threads are pretty forgiving and the gasket is pretty stout. Seems that some people use them fine that way. I'm avoiding it. YMMV. I'm going lighter this year, so am going with 2 – 1L SmartWater bottles with the Mini attached to one, and the fliptop cap from the 700ml bottle on the other, to use for backflushing the mini since the nipple fits over the mini outflow nozzle.
Glen Thanks for the insight. My typical set up has been 2 1 liter smart water bottles and a 700ml on the shoulder. I also carried a 2L platypus for ling carries or if I needed more water in camp. I was thinking of downsizing a bit and only carrying the should bottle and a single 1L for clean, then a couple dirty bags just in case I sprung a leak or needed an extra carry. I try to keep a 4L total if can just in case.
I was using Portable Aqua tabs so I would cycle out the 1L bottles as the time was up on the pills. The Mini should allow me to get water a bit more quicker. Thanks for the tip on rolling too.
I have never used the older Sawyer bags, but I've been using the bags that came with the mini for a few months without any issues. A couple of times I've been a little impatient (really squeezing a bag of slushy water while my hands are freezing) and no bursting, but I guess I shouldn't do that too often. Also, I've use the mini on the Platy threads without any issues. I honestly didn't know they had been a problem for others until recently. Maybe the gasket is just that good or I wasn't pushing hard since I was drinking right out of it.
