Just looking for past experience specifically with Jansport warranty.

I realized that my 10+ year old Jansport bag (Cordilliera 33, heavy but awesome school/day bag) is showing expected normal wear: the bottle holders are useless, mesh separated from elastic. The haul loop ripped and I sewed it enough to stop it from ripping worse, so now I never lift by that, several other rips and tears that don't affect use. Given the hours I have on this bag, it was built like a tank.

Is this something I should take them up on their lifetime warranty for? I'd be happy if they replaced the bottle holders, sewed the haul loop, and sent it back, but I don't expect/hope for them to send me a nice new replacement for these relatively minor issues.

Cost to me is one way shipping and no use of my often-carried bag for (I assume) a month, I just feel a little petty sending it back for bottle holders.

Asking for "moral" guidance on returns on BPL is like asking a fundamentalist religious nut whether watching porn is OK

If you want to send it in then do it … If they give u something new or repair it then theres no loss

Plenty of BPLers have taken advantage of ospreys lifetime warranty

    ;)

Jansport warranty used to be outstanding. I haven't used it in years though. I do have the same pack that I used for school that has the same problems. I should get around to sending it back if I ever need a school pack again.

In the past they have sen in new zippers, replaced zipper pulls (nice touch) and repaired straps that were tearing away from the pack.

It's not truly a moral question (I like your analogy!) they have a section on the form to authorize up to $20 in non-warranty repair. Not sure what that means on a lifetime warranty, but I could see them say oh we don't cover wear on bottle holder elastic. I'm going to call them on Monday and see what that bit means. I could make the repairs myself and if they plan on charging me a penny, I'll do just that. Its just they'll do a nicer job.

Thanks, Jeff. That's the experience I was looking for, zipper pulls IS a nice touch! One of the damages is obvious dryer damage (circular melt mark, I used to be stupider) so that had me thinking they'd blame any damage on that. I'll call them and report back here.

I called Jansport warranty. The guy said look, the things you describe may seem minor but it is most likely the case that we will deem it cheaper to just send you a new backpack. The majority of cases, that is what happens. A couple of minor repairs adds up, and we compare that cost to the factory cost of shipping you a bag.

I don't feel petty at all now, they have this policy for brand loyalty. period.

He did say that it's a true lifetime warranty, including normal wear and even abuse, tears, etc. The $20 authorization is very rarely used and would cover something like repairing an obvious cigarette burn on an otherwise fine bag. If there are other issues things like that get overlooked/taken care of.

Now I have to decide if I want nostalgia or a new bag? New bag sounds likely.
