Grand Canyon 2nd week October

Grand Canyon 2nd week/October sleep bag



can anyone share with me what temp rating sleeping bag would be sufficient for a hike into the grand canyon the second week of october

would a 40 degree bag work…..i was thinking of picking up a used one…….REI Kilo Flash +40 deg bag

any advice would be much appreciated

should be fine, the inner gorge is usually same temps as the Phoenix area, only cooling a bit more at nite. I would expect temps in GC to reach low 50's- but anything can happen. layer up!

I hiked across the GC from the north rim to the south rim in the 2nd week of October in 99'. I used a 40 degree down bag w/ a bivy sack and it was more than I really needed but worked fine. It was 28 degrees at 6 AM when we started hiking down from the north rim and was 94 degrees at the first campsite on the trail later that day. What a temperature difference! It was no colder than the mid-50s in the bottom of the canyon at night. Take a good sun hat and dress for hot weather as the sun gets pretty hot down in the canyon. A great trip and one of my fondest memories. Enjoy!
