I've been looking around for a Golite jam, and have seen some major weight discrepancies among people who are selling them. From what i've gathered the original was the lightest, the 2nd gen weighed around 16-17oz, and the current model weighs about 30oz. Are these weights accurate, or have people trimmed and removed things from the earlier generations to make them lighter? Also, why did Golite double the weight, was it in materials, padding, etc..? Finally, can I strip the new models down closer to the 16-17oz range. Thanks

the 2009 Jam that I have is heavier than my original Jam because:

1 it is greater capacity – say 50-55 litres as opposed to the original's 40-45 litres

2 it has a whole lot of 3D mesh padding down the back and on the hipbelt where the original did not

3 It has hipbelt pockets (and hipbelt is larger)

4 The stretch pockets are a heavier fabric than the original mesh

In many ways the newer has better design features and definitely more comfortable, but not as well made. Barring fire or loss, I expect the old one to last a lifetime, while the 2009 Jam is slowly coming apart on some seams.

I took my original on a 3 day backpack in the Welsh mountains last summer, (it was sunny!) and it was great with the lighter load I had then. I also prefer it for woodland camps/bivis as the 3D mesh on the newer pack attracts pine needles and suchlike – surprisingly fiddly to clean up.

ps
I don't think the weight has doubled?! My packs are both size L. Original= 650g approx, 2009 = 900g approx
