My Sierra Designs Junction 15 sleeping bag zips fully open so that it lays flat. A ripstop nylon floor zips into the sleeping bag in order to create a double quilt with draft protection.the floor is just wide enough to fit two 20 inch wide sleeping mats. To keep the mats from slipping around I intend to add silicone strips or beads. The bag weighs 2.5 lbs. I haven't weighed the floor yet. Got the bag at STP on sale. Got the fabric and zipper from diygearsupply.com.

Wow looks great! Now I'm inspired to undertake a similar project! How did you ensure the zipper would mate up?

Thanks. regarding the zipper matching, I completely guessed. The zipper on the bag looked like a number 5 YKK so that is what I ordered and it worked out.good luck!
Awesome work there! Does that bag have equal amount of fill/insulation for the top and bottom? Because I know some bags have less in the half that is under your than the half of the bag that goes over.
I've been using something like that for years, except all one piece with no zippers. There's a half zipper at the center on top.
One problem is there's an air channel on both sides of me, on top of the sleeping pad. Air drafts around a little and makes it colder. Still works pretty good though. Do you have that problem?

That is a great question. I'm not sure. The bag is marketed to open up and be used as a down blanket/quilt so my thought is that they would distribute the down evenly because of this claim, but its hard to know.

I haven't tested it in the field yet. My wife nor any hiking buddies are willing to hop in the sack with me on the trail. My wife, because its winter. My buddies because they prefer personal space over helping me out (understandably)
I anticipate having that draft problem you describe. I'm not yet sure how to address the draft issues with a double quilt with conservative dimensions.
That is a great looking double sleep system!
I hope the pads stay in place for you.
My wife and I have used a similar system for over twenty years. First a commercial "Thermanest" double system and now one we made ourselves. As for drafts, hopefully the quilt has sufficient slack to wrap around yer heads well enough. I always wear a warm hat, but my wife never does, no mater how cold it gets. We also wear our Uniqlo down parkas to bed in chilly weather.
I really like the looks of what you made there. Let us know how well it works out for ya!
