I've been looking at silnylon rainpaints/jacket as a plan B option for backpacking.

I don't plan on doing many miles and the main perk here is if my shelter is destroyed due to a stick or some other insane wind damage during a storm I won't die due to hypothermia :-P

I was thinking that this would also work as a vapor barrier liner while you sleep.

Just use a wool liner (pants+shirt) and then the silnylon jacket+pants and then climb in your sleeping bag.

If you are looking for an ultralight waterproof "breathable" rain jacket, CampSaver has a limited selection of Marmot's 6 ounce Essence Jacket. Coupon code PRES20 takes another 20% of bringing it down to $76 with free shipping in the US. That will be a whole lot less miserable to wear than a silnylon jacket and like any waterproof "breathable" jacket, will still be effective enough vapor barrier:

I think the OP wants a VBL that does double duty as a rain suit. My thoughts on this idea is it will breath too much. The pants waist and coat hem would let out too much body heat you'd end up both wet and cold. But, who knows, maybe. My guess is gut-based and not science based.
