If there is snow and ice on ground..say over a good foot of it and I pitch my tarp..use my stakes as deadmen and kind of bury them sideways..its below freezing and get some snow/rain/ice during the night..maybe 6-10 inches more..in the morning everything is frozen solid??? Now what? Is there anyway to prevent the stakes from getting frozen solid under the snow and ice? Would I pretty much be screwed? I may test this out tonight in my yard as we are supposed to get another 6 inches or so of wintery mix on top of the foot os frozen ice and snow we already have. Any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone? I'm sure it has?

If possible, don't use stakes, use pieces of wood from the area. Run your guyline around the piece of wood and back toward your shelter. Bury the wood as you would a deadman. Attach/tie/whatever your guyline back to your shelter and tighten as appropriate. In the morning you should be able to just pull the guyline from the buried 'stake' while leaving the wood buried.
I think you are worrying too much. Use branches and tie your lines so you can slip them out. Carry a fixed blade knife if you want to chip at ice. An ice ax would be the ultimate tool for such things.
yes, good ideas..thanks. Yes, I probably am worrying too much, but I like to be prepared..hate to get caught out there
Titanium does not freeze into the snow. See our articles
