25 years ago today, the US Air Force launched the first operational GPS satellite, USA-35.

Whether you use GPS while backpacking or not, the maps you use are much more accurate because of GPS. And our civilization depends on GPS for a lot more than doing stupid human tricks.

Wired Magazine has a good retrospective: Celebrating 25 Years of Not Getting Lost Thanks to GPS

See http://www.gps.gov for more official information.

That's an interesting slice of history.

The first GPS bird was up in 1989. However, it took DoD a while to get enough of them up to make them practical. I talked to some U.S. Army Signal Corps guys who were sent to Alaska around 1990, and they were given precision GPS receivers. They went out on the ice offshore from Point Barrow and recorded those early GPS signals, just to see how this was going to work out for the polar regions.
