I have a buddy who's expressed interest in a multi-day trip next winter. He's based in Rochester and I'm looking for 3-7 day hike possibilities anywhere in that region. He doesn't have too much experience so we likely wouldn't be making many miles, but he's enthusiastic, so something that's not too technically challenging, but is a little off the beaten path would be perfect.

This is for next winter, so I'm just gathering ideas for now. Anything you folks recommend I look into?

Finger Lakes Trail in Letchworth. Follows the “Grand Canyon of the East”. 24 miles each way, connects to main FLT if you want to extend the hike.

Letchworth is a great suggestion. If he has been in the Rochester area for long, there's a good chance he's been there already during summer or fall. The Bristol Hills Trail is also worth mentioning.

This website is a great resource for all hiking possibilities in the area.

I would also suggest doing the southern third of the Northville-Placid trail. Upper Benson to Piseco. This section has little elevation change, some nice lean-to's and camping spots, and the only major river (that I can think of right now) has a long suspension bridge (at Whitehouse).

To do this, you would need to leave one car in Piseco or Upper Benson, and drive back to the other trail-head.

You could also consider Piseco to Wakely Dam.
