Hey all,
Don't know if this has been posted already, but I just thought I'd give a head's up to those who might be entering the Rae Lakes region in the Sierra's…

Unless your Bearvault has a red sticker on the lid, it is not approved for use in this area. Rangers (courtesy of Bearvault) will swap your old cannister for the newer approved one for no charge when you pick up your permit. I just did this for the JMT two weeks ago, it was painless.

According to the rangers there, unless you have the red sticker model, bears in this region have apparently learned to do a CPR-like move, repeatedly compressing the container while on its side, eventually warping/popping the lid (Pretty clever!)
The red sticker model has a heavier, stronger lid.

So if you're buying one, might as well look for the newest model…
Cool of bearvault to replace them for free.

Well, at least that's one tag I didn't remove (I checked). If I remember correctly they changed threads too. That means you need the whole can, not just the lid.

As the game warden in Jurassic Park says as his last words "clever girl…."
