In light of this discussion in the gear thread…

…I'm going to give a lightweight poncho a try. We're getting so little rain here in the southland that heavy duty rain gear isn't a priority.

I would like to MYOG a poncho of polycryo (but maybe nylon oven bag or possibly trash compactor bag). In a wild deviation from my normal procedure of 'jump into a new project with little research' I figured I would ask the BPL community for advice before starting. Imagine it is reasonably straightforward except for fabricating and taping in the hood.

Also is it safe to assume that quality packing tape is the best attachment method? Seemed to work tenaciously when I taped polycryo together for a ground cloth. Would you tape both sides of a seam?

Would a draw cord around the face be important? And what about a brim to the hood? Are these reasonable mods to make when working with polycryo?

Finally, does anyone have a favorite poncho pattern?
