I tried searching for this and couldn't find anything, but I'm sure somebody's done it. I'm trying to make a completely removable beak for a flat silnylon tarp. I want it to be removable because I like the versatility of having a flat tarp, and might not always carry the beak.

My question is, what's the best way to attach it? Velcro? Plastic snaps? I was thinking #20 snaps every 8 inches or so, but that might result in splatter, unless I attach them a few inches under the lip of the tarp. The other question is, would they hold if the beak gets a gust of wind. Would velcro hold?

Anyone have any experience with this?

I saw this two week old thread. If you haven't already used Velcro or snaps, read on.

I have a ray way tarp with a net tent which attaches by "s" hooks to loops on the tarp. I disliked them because any wiggling of the tarp would shake the hooks off. I replaced them with hardwood dowels just longer than the loops. I ran upholstery thread through a hole drilled in the middle of the dowels. The dowels stay in the loops dependably and weigh less than the "s" hooks. This will be lighter than snaps and probably Velcro too.

If you were thinking of snaps, you could also consider magnets. If you search magnets on amazon you can find 100 neodymium magnets for something like $7. they are extremely strong and light.

I've been thinking about doing something like this with line-locks at the 3 corners of a triangle with toggles fixed at the end of the cord.

Just slip the toggles through the tie-outs at the corners of your tarp and at the peak.

You could easily attach a line-lock to the middle of an edge on the triangle if you didn't want a flat beak.
