Hi,

I bought a zpacks blast food bag and conducted an experiment at home. I poured a liter or so of water into the bag and checked the seams along the bottom. They were somewhat wet on the outside. I believe this bag is supposed to be waterproof. Have others encountered this sort of thing?

I wrote to Joe at Zpacks to ask him, but I'm curious what other owners of this item may have found.

Thanks,

rhz

What makes you think it should be water proof?

Neither of my blast food bags have taped seams.

"What makes you think it should be water proof?"

From the zPacks site: The included food bag has waterproof taped seams, and a roll top to keep out the rain.

It looks like it actually depends on whether you got the draw closure or roll top.

draw cord closure="The seams on these are not sealed. They can be strengthened and sealed or patched with Tape. "

Roll top="This is the same Rectangular Blast Food Bag as above, except with waterproof taped seams and a roll top closure to keep the contents dry."

I have had my Zpacks Blast food bag hanging in plenty of rain out here in the PNW. While I don't consider mine totally "waterproof" in a torture testing environment, I feel that under any imaginable real, natural world circumstance I can get myself into it will keep my food dry.

I generally don't consider cuben dry sacks to be true dry sacks, fwiw, my HMGs and zpacks will leak a little air due to more material at top seam where you roll being thicker, whereas MLDs don't tend to leak air as top seam is very thin …. problem with MLD's is they aren't usable to me since they're so long and skinny, hard to get into …. . dimensions need tweaking big time, imo compared to my zpacks and hmg's ….

I don't mind a a little bit of leakage so I can squeeze air out …. I've never had a problem with my blast getting water in it when it has rained …. they're pretty bombproof, but if you were say river running, would not be my bag of choice …. my experience has been great with them backpacking though ….

I totally agree. A long skinny food bag is hard to pack until it gets short enough to lay horizonatlly.

My MLD is also poorly designed. The buckle is basically attached with a cuben tape strip. When you hang it, the tape slides down to one end of the buckle slot and bunches up. Then it sticks there forever.

MLD put zero thought into their food bag. A cuben strip, OK ,a tape strip that is sticky, um ..no.

Locate the spots and analyze. Zpacks sells cheap cuben tape, so you could fix it yourself. They would also probably fix it for free if it was in fact intended to be waterproof.
