Ok people I'm looking for a pack for packrafting ( yes I posted over there as well). I would just buy a HMG porter ULA Epic but I have my own set of requirements. Because of a leg and hip issue from a motorcycle wreck years ago I can't really back pack any more or carry a large load on my back very far. But I can portage gear on the river and move it around from car to plane to train to river.
I will be traveling to Alaska this summer for numerous packraft trips and next winter in Mexico for the same.

My requirements are:

Durability while traveling ie: Can be thrown around by baggage handlers both domestic third world. Survive the at times nasty cargo hold on a Latin American bus.

Big enough for an alpacka Denali llama with ww spray deck and all associated gear. Plus associated back country gear and food. I'm thinking about 70L + or – .

Light and packable. Must easily fit and stow nicely threw the cargo fly on my Alpacka when empty. Light in important as everything else will be as light as I can get ( for the most part). I'm trying to keep as much weight off my leg and hips as possible.

Water proof or highly water resistant ie: everything stays totally dry in an hour long tropical down poor with the pack out in the open or on top of a bus

Ideally, not flashy.

My best guess is the ULA Epic would be a better choice. I think the suspension should be fine even with a heavy load as I'm most likely not going to be carrying it more than a mile. But not having used or even seen ether the ULA or HMG packs I'm just speculating. Any thought on the Exped 60L?

Mostly, I'm looking for is what I might have missed. Any other packs out there that fit my requirements?

The Epic seems like the best off the shelf answer. Use a heavier drybag or duffle and you'll tick all your boxes, with a bit of a weight penalty. You could even put the pack inside the bag for travel. I would not be keen on trusting hybrid cuben to survive bus travel.

Sea to Summit makes a drybag with a shoulder/hipbelt integrated that looks pretty burly. It has lash points and no dedicated frame, and comes in at 2lb 4oz. You can reduce that further if you replace some of the metal hardware on the harness.

Bonus: It's only 160 bucks for the 65 liter, which should be enough for your needs.

Doesn't look super comfortable but you wouldn't be carrying it long.

Honestly, this looks like a job for Zimmerbuilt and Chris Zimmer. Have him design you a harness that can hold a separate drybag. Beat your drybag to shit on your trips, and replace as necessary for ~30 bucks instead of buying a new pack.

The travel durability kinks the choices I think. A duffle bag outer cover comes to mind. Get a cheap one and donate it at the trailhead and pick up another at the local street market. That would help make it less of a target than a fancy pack or even a fancy pack cover like the Osprey Airporter.

My first thought was a surplus military duffel, but that might be a problem in some areas. I stay away from anything "tactical" in appearance. Bruce Chatwin wrote of being suspected of being a spy in a small African country. How do you prove you're not? You don't want the local cartel thinking you are a mercenary!

Thanks for the suggestions. Lots of things to think about. The sea to summit pack looks good as I can remove the suspension if I need too.
The only thing I don't like is being stuck with one size bag. The Epic and something made by Zimmerbuilt seems like the right choice. I could buy or make what ever size I want for any given trip.

An over bag is not a bad idea at all. I might make one. And indeed, military colors or camo is not a good idea.

Thanks again.
