    @10-7

I followed the guidance I received from this thread which successfully shut of the advertisements.

I noticed that I am receiving advertisements again on BPL. I've checked my settings and confirmed that I have the advertisements turned off.

Has there been a change in policy on exempting lifetime members from advertisements or is there an error in the system where I should open a ticket?

    Hi Ian

Moan at [email protected] about this. He is tweaking the code for the web site, and sometimes has an oops.

    Cheers

In case anyone is/was wondering, I received this a week or so ago…

"We are still running some tests with ads, so the ad-off switch won't hide ads on top level and index pages, but it will / should hide all the ads on the actual content pages at BPL.

I finally gave up and just started using ad blocker.

"I finally gave up and just started using ad blocker."

I'm on the verge, myself, because I'm getting sick and tired of boobs to the right and boobs to the left of every page on this website, not to mention the hypocrisy of a website that allows it while proclaiming itself a family website and censoring even innocent words like g@y. At the same time I resent having to install yet more software on my computer to avoid something that should be taken care of by the website itself. What a mess. As for moaning to RJ, now that is rich, given his famous lack of responsiveness to member input.

This is really weird. I am running Windows 7 and Google Chrome and no ads. But another site I visit once in a while has ads, always has.

Maybe it has something to do with browser caching, but because I have never engaged in geo-caching or because I don't use a GPS, I think I must be exempt from the ads.

But using my iPhone or iPad and mobile Safari, I see ads.

And I don't get to see boobs… only sporting goods stuff.

    Tom, you wanna trade computers?

What's wrong with gay? I would have thought that BPL was LGBTI friendly just like the BSA?

It used to be that the "censor" filter would not allow a post with the word gay in it, although we have found that capitalizing the first letter of a word usually tricks the censor.

The trashy way they're presented puts them squarely in the Walmart sporting goods category, and it gets old real quick.

    "Tom, you wanna trade computers?"

That would fall in the category of taking advantage of an honorable man. ;0)

    They are definitely still back.

Couple of times I've found them a little annoying, in that some of them were quite chunky at the top of the page and I had to scroll past them to quickly see the next link that I knew I wanted. But I'm used to it now. Meh.

I have noticed over the last few days that the type of ad that I was complaining about has disappeared. At least from my view. If this is the result of BPL staff cleaning things up, I wish to extend them a sincere THANK YOU! It has been a much more pleasant viewing experience of late.

I suspect the ads are done via Google. As I understand it, Google looks at your browser history and places ads based on that.

Last week I checked a couple items on Home Depot's website. My ads are now hardware and hardware store related. No more sporting goods.

Still not seeing the ads on my PC, only my iPhone and iPad.

I flush my cookies more often than the toilet.

    No Google tracking here…

That's how I understood it as well, Nick, but here's the rub: I do not do much web browsing in general, that only from a PC, and I'm not at all interested in T&A shows, porn, or any other spectator sport. The objectionable stuff that was showing up on BPL pages I viewed had nothing to do with my browsing habits, with one exception early on, when I linked to an article in an Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, to read a political article. There was that famous "Want to learn French?" ad that many people here have mentioned. Sure enough, it followed me back to BPL. Other than that, I have no idea where the rest of the crap was coming from. In any case, it has disappeared over the last few days. However it was resolved, without any change whatsoever in my browsing habits, so I am now a happy camper. I am now in the process of trying to decide whether to genuflect in the direction of Bozeman or just chalk it up to some natural phenomenon like sunspots or climate change. ;0)

    Tom,
Thanks, I didn't know about history mining. Bastards.

Cookies, cache, and history … will be flushed on a regular basis, and on close of session.

And, I have found a FireFox extension called Disconnect 2 that supposedly blocks tracking and other stuff.

Yeah, they are collectively a piece of work. Bastards is putting it politely it politely.

Just below the last post, my ad comes up for scientology.org

However google's analytics work, they are 100% off for me here.
