The Stoic Luft Synthetic Mitt was my holy grail. A thick synthetic jacket for my hands, and ultralight, for a good price.

My brother melted a hole in mine the size of a baseball… so now I'm reluctantly and depressingly back in the market.

Are any of the cottage manufacturers making simple synthetic mittens with a long cuff for sub-zero temperatures? Anyone have any suggestions at all?

Thanks,

Max

In order to hit the right compromise between warmth and dexterity in mittens, I sew my mittens with a single layer of synthetic insulation facing the palm side and a double layer on the back side. Then, depending on the expected temperature, I can leave the double layer as is, or I can stuff in additional insulation bits between the two main layers.

Hi Max

Mitts is one of the things i've been thinking of making and selling. But with Apex, not Primaloft. Apex lasts longer and doesn't need to be quilted, except the perimeter.

Plus i'm thinking of adding some Pile for the inside, super soft and quick drying.

You can pm me if you're interested in me making a pair for you. Ballpark cost would be 30-35 not including shipping.

That pattern is for fleece mittens, which are much less warmer, and easier/less complex to make.

You could use that same pattern though, just would have to double everything, and sew the layers to together. Might want to make the outside shell a bit larger than the inside one too.

I've made flat thumb mittens before, and have come to view the lowered claw type thumb as nice looking, but not really all that necessary in any practical sense.

Yes, pattern is for fleece. That's what I meant by "you'll have to add insulation." I agree, it would be simple to modify the pattern for insulation. But I think the OP wants to buy, not make.

Aah! I would have been very interested in a lobster version but just bought a(nother) pair two days ago.
Very reasonable price too.

Good luck with your start-up.

This is a good point! Do you really want Primaloft for mittens? That's an area that'll get repeated compression…

Hi Max,
not sure if you've seen this thread

http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=58002

It's very easy to make them yourself. I followed very same steps with Primaloft insulation
and they turned out great. Sadly I gave em all away so I can't comment on their performance.
I am going to make some more but with APEX insulation as I didn't quilt Primaloft to the liner
glove so the insulation wasn't as stable as it should be to remove glove without moving insulation. Using cheap pertex fabric and 60g/m2 Primaloft they were very cozy and warm.

Cheers

Everyone in this thread has been extremely helpful. I have multiple options now for a replacement, multiuple ideas for making some myself, and even an offer by Justin to make some for me.

Thanks for being so helpful!

I ended up making a very messy repair with some Leukotape and I will see if it holds. if it doesn't, my next step is probably to source some new ones from Justin. I am thinking Apex wins over Primaloft in this case, but I will be looking for some serious mitts in this case for deep cold.

Keep the ideas coming for the benefit of the forum, by all means!

Yeah, I wish some more of my gear looked like it's seen a war. Honestly, it makes it less likely that I get robbed while I nomad around. My cycling backpack looks like it's seen a war:

Hi,

they sell them close to my home. I think they are 50EUR. If you want I can
pick em up and ship em to you.

Cheers
