My wife and I are off to do a 7-day backpack on the Teton Crest week after next. We've got our total weights down to 31 and 27 lbs, respectively, despite carrying a 6 pound luxury hotel (H'berg Nammatj 2) and bear canisters.

I'm having some trouble deciding on my insulation layers, though. I'm expecting highs in the 80s and lows in the 40s or so. I sleep warm and have a WM Summerlite bag.

I'm wearing a Patagonia Capilene 1 T-shirt as my baselayer/every day T-shirt. For torso insulation, I've got the following options (and ain't buying anything new just now):

1. Icebreaker 200 longsleeve T (8oz)
2. Marmot DriClime original Windshirt (14oz)
3. Western Mountaineering Flight (11oz)
4. Patagonia R1 vest (10oz)

I'll also have a DriDucks jacket which I can wear as a shell if all heck breaks loose. :)

I think I'll need to bring two of the four insulation pieces. Under the "wear it all if the weather goes bad" theory, basically any two of the four will keep me warm when moving down to freezing or 20d.

I think my initial inclination is to bring the Icebreaker longsleeve T and the Marmot windshirt – even though I think their functions are a bit too similar.

Marmot Windshirt, plus the WM Flight would be fine too, but hiking in the Flight is obviously out of the question as I'd overheat in about three steps.

Thoughts? Much appreciated! (I recognize that shirt + unlined windshirt + Flight would be perfect, but…)

Regards,
– Christian

Were it me, I'd take the Driclime and the WM vest. I doubt you'll encounter weather that would demand you hike in the vest. The Driclime will give you a lot of flexibility while moving. Having the vest to throw on in-camp or to supplement your bag through an unexpected cold snap would be just about right, I would think.

I don't think the WM is the Vest, its the jacket. I would take the PTG vest and the windshirt, but also see if you could drop the wind and bring the wool 200 shirt, if you are bringing a waterproof shell, I think that would be almost as versatile and maybe a little warmer than the windshirt if it gets chilly.

Thanks, guys. Jonathan is right – my WM Flight is the jacket, not the vest.

Weighing things and thinking it over, I'm either going to go with the wool shirt/Flight jacket or wool shirt/R1 vest. Either one should be plenty warm for the conditions and the shirt saves a few ounces over the windshirt and provides nearly exactly the same function.
