So I've been patiently and persistently converting my group of hiker buddies over to the lighter side of things and have many of them using Fosters or keg pots now in their cook setups. I also lately had the great fortune of convincing them of the merits of freezer bag cooking (read: now I'm not the last one to be eating my food). I made my group a bunch of 4 cup pot caddies with Reflectix cozies to cook their food in and store their beer can pots because, well I'm nice and it was my idea for them to give the whole thing a try in the first place. Long story short, they love them, but I also have a good amount of 4 cup containers left and about 40 feet of Reflectix leftover. Fortunately I made some templates for the different containers early on that allowed me to whip some additional setups together pretty quickly. Point of this thread is, is anybody interested? I also threw together some beer cozies because they're awesomely nerdy and keep your beverages remarkably cool and your hands remarkably warm……. at the same time (magic).

I'm not throwing these out here to make a big profit, I'd make far more money if I just stayed at work instead of looking like a conspiracy theorist playing with foil on my couch, but I like these things, and my friends do too, and they fit our needs very well so maybe some other people may find some use for them too.

The knockoff Ziploc one is my favorite. It has graduations on the side, adds good protection to the pot, and the twist lid feels nice and secure.

The green snap lid one is really light, adds a small layer of protection to your pot, and functions well for cooking food in, but is very minimalistic. Very similar to a deli container. Don't sit on it.

Both containers fit a quart size freezer bag perfectly, and allow the zip portion of the bags to be folded over the lip of the containers when it comes time to chow.

And lastly the beer cozy. I made it as a dumb bored joke and ended up using it every night (maybe I drink soda too). Things cool. Anyways, if anybody wants any of these non-original products for a fairly fair price hand made by an admittedly ocd perfectionist fellow BPLer, let me know on here or by email at norcalweaver@gmail.com.

I figured $15 shipped (conus) for the twist containers (container and cozy), $14 shipped for the UL snap lid version (container and cozy), and $10 shipped for the beer (soda) cozies (no cheap beer or soda included).

Pics shown with Zelph's 2 cup flat bottom Foster's can for reference.

Also worth noting is that the primary reason I even considered the addition of a caddy/cooking vessel to my pack is that I'm also a squeeze/mini user and used to carry a cut down soda bottle to fill the water bags/reservoirs with. I now use the 4 cup container for that purpose instead, and for "cooking" my food, while also protecting my can pot. Three purposes is pretty good :)

Both containers are rated as recycling #5 so are food grade and can handle high temps.

I'd like to buy to of the twist off heavier containers. Also, if there was a half-size (maybe 12-16 oz) which would work as mug/bowl for soup/oats I would also be interested in those!

Sweet cozies, Matt! I just noticed you have the same scale that I have. Get it on DealExtreme? :-)

Bill: Sounds good. I'll see what I have after work today as far as a midsize container goes and get back to you on that. I'm certain I have some twist containers of those proportions left floating around as I made one of those in the past for my trail breakfast forays. Regardless I'll get a couple of the 4 cup twist container cozies made for you tonight, and will update on the smaller size.

Ben: Thanks for the cozy compliment :) I've inadvertently become "the cozy guy" in my local hiking community, very odd. The digital scale I've actually had for maybe 6 or 7 years now? I originally purchased it on eBay for $2.99 shipped for my other weight obsessing hobby, bikes. I figured the scale would crap out quickly but it's been a great little unit. Used at minimum twice a week this whole time, never a glitch and still on the original set of batteries!

Bill, came across some Ziploc containers of the 16oz variety, also with graduated markings. I went ahead and whipped up a cozy for one, let me know if interested.

While it's been nice not making any for some time now, I still have a good amount of containers and material leftover and could whip some up after work this week if interested. What did you have in mind?

I'd like to buy two of the twist tops if you have the stuff to make them. Let me know if you do and how to get you the funds.

I'll take one (possibly two if my buddy wants one) of the twist top ones as well. Price the same shipped for two? PM me payment info. Thanks.

Can you make the Ziploc Twist ones watertight? Perhaps with an added seal material or something like that? I've heard these types of containers aren't truly watertight out of the box, which really is a bummer!

PostedMay 2, 2014 at 6:08 am

I'm just responding to this real quickly before I head off to work, so haven't had a chance to check for the "watertightness" of the containers I use (a ziploc knockoff). I'm sure that if the containers are not watertight currently, that they could easily be made to be so. But also due to the nature of the very widely spaced threads on all containers of this type, I would never trust one for long term liquid storage and especially transport. I'm positive the lid would quickly work itself loose due to the limited amount of turns required to tighten the lid down.

I guess it depends what your intent would be with a watertight ziploc style container. If it's to prepare a meal in without a bag inside, and shake it up a little to disperse/mix some liquids, then that's feasible. I'd never fill the container with liquid and chuck it in my bag though, regardless of how well the seal was beefed up.
