Anyone on forum that carries a messenger/shoulder type bag over the traditional backpack? If so, how long have you done this? And what brand bag do you use?

I used a messenger bag throughout college, and use one for work on a daily basis, but have never used one for extensive hiking, let alone backpacking – for good reason.

They aren't that comfortable. I love the convenience, being able to sling the bag behind or in front of me to reach in without taking it off, versatility, and capacity, but carrying any amount of weight for a substantial length of time on one shoulder gets to be unpleasant.

They carry weight best in a bicycling position, where the bag rests in the small of your back or on your rear, taking some weight off the shoulder, but in an upright walking position this doesn't work.

p.s. I use Timbuk2, not light but durable and waterproof material, plus good selection of shapes and sizes to fit you and what you need to carry.
