MYOG Down Hood 2.0

Looks great, I'm inspired!

I've have spent all day looking fabric for the MYOG dual quilt, booties, and hoods I'm hoping to make soon.

Where'd you get the Argon? Any comments to share on cost, comfort, and down proofness?

I bought the Argon CS90 from Dutch Ware Gear. The CS90 ($8) is 15D and just under 1oz/yd2 vs the regular .67oz 10D Argon ($10).

Both 1oz/yd2 15D Impetus and Argon CS90 are nice in their own way.
Of the two, I like the feel of Impetus better. Its smooth and silky/soft, but harder to tell which side is the calendered side.
The Argon CS90 has a more obvious ripstop pattern to it, and has a very noticeable cire/calendered side, which makes it easy to tell which side is inside/outside. It's also soft, but not as silky as Impetus.

Both are completely downproof with 850FP, based on my repeated stuffing/compressing of my Impetus down quilt and the new hood I made from Argon.

The Argon kind of gets slightly bumpy looking when taking an iron on low to it, while the Impetus doesn't, probably because of the ripstop vs microripstop.

Impetus is $9.15 a linear yard, while Argon CS90 is $8. Not a big difference, but like adding grams to a pack, the dollars and cents can add up. Also, CS90 comes in black, orange, and red while Impetus 1.0 is only stone gray.

Overall, I like the price/color options of CS90, but like the feel of Impetus more.

Haven't tested their DWR treatments, so can't comment on that. Regular 10D argon will probably feel really nice and is only .67oz and $10, but I like the slight piece of mind from using 15D.

I just did a search for Argon as I'd like to get a down quilt made with some and this report came up. Sounds like I should consider Impetus, too.

Any insight you can add to how this pattern evolved, the methods you used, etc? I'd like to make a down beanie and some booties but a little intimidated as to where to start.

I started with the pattern I found online (I think I might have it linked in one of my other posts). I can't remember what percentage I printed the pattern at, but really, it was just trial and error. Finally ever l evolved to the 3.0 hood design, which I think I ended up selling, too. I do like the horizontal baffles best. Be sure to make it proportionally long enough for when the down puffs it up. Some people do box baffles, but for most uses, I think sewn through is perfectly suitable and easier. I think a walking foot for the machine would help a lot since the lightweight fabric is harder to sew especially when you get to the edges/ends.
