I am slowly being converted to the virtues of a tarp and recently used my Sport Chalet action pass rewards to purchase the Nite Ize reflective 2.5mm cord for guy lines. I have been out practicing my pitches with an 8'x10' poly tarp and using a truckers knot through a slippery half-hitch to tension my lines. First day out using the Nite Ize cord and the outer sheath lacerated in two places where the line was pulled through itself when releasing the half-hitch. I emailed Nite Ize customer service and to their credit was contacted the next day informing me that and new pack is on it's way.

Do other reflective lines behave in a similar way?

The beauty of a slippery half hitch is that is quick release when pulled apart but I am wondering if a knot such as this needs to be first 'worked' loose because of the weave of a reflective cord. The outer sheath of this particular line is somewhat coarse but the smaller diameter and specific use would seem appropriate to actually hold a knot.

I've noticed that the reflective strand woven into the Nite Ize stuff is pretty fragile. It breaks and small pieces can pull out. I doubt it affects the strength in any meaningful way, but it is kind of annoying. It doesn't happen with other reflective lines like Triptease or Glowire. However, the Nite Ize stuff is the only kind I've found with a reflective tracer that is big enough to not slip under load in a LineLoc 3.

Bluewater and PMI make 3mm reflective cord. Both are available at REI and elsewhere.
