Impact of removing core from cord?

I recently had slippage with the lines on my Notch, so I'm planning to change the lines out to 3mm cord. I had some 3mm cord that I tested with, and it certainly holds better in the lineloc 3s than the line that came with the tent. The problem is that the 3mm line is quite a bit bulkier, and the knots are really unsightly, and don't hold that well with the cord that I have. I pulled the core (kern) out of a piece, and it still seems to hold very well in the linelocs, makes a tidier knot, and weighs a significant amount less (28%, or about half an ounce for all the lines).

I'm considering removing the core from the reflective cord that I get for replacement lines, but are there any negatives to this? Of course the strength will be less, but it seems like the sheath alone ought to be plenty strong for this application, no? There is quite a bit more initial stretch with the sheath only line, but the stretch seems to be taken up with just a little load and then it seems ok.

Any reasons I shouldn't do this? I'm just trying to find something that will work "for sure" in the linelocs and not be complete overkill.

Removing the core doesn't sound like a very efficient solution. I'm not sure what kind of line you have, but for Dyneema and Spectra-based line, almost all of the strength is in the core. (The sheaths are either polyester or nylon.)

There's a spreadsheet of lightweight, high-strength line here:

The strength will drop of course, but maybe the real impact will be a significant reduction in the 'handle' of the cord. It just won't be the same. But try a metre or two and see.

Cheers
