I have read in older threads/posts that the new MEC T3 hoodie's material is much thinner than it has been in previous years. It seems to compare more to a Patagonia Capilene 4 hoody now. I wanted to use the T3 as base layer and/or outer layer over a short sleeve synthetic tee. It would mostly be worn during chilly mornings and evenings. Basically, I was wondering how durable it is. I know it probably can't be used during any bushwhacking but, how much abuse can it take? Can it be worn as an outer layer like this?

The new T3, while a bit thinner than the old one is still a bit thicker than the cap4

Consider it somewhere between a cap4 and R1

The grid patterns is more continous with smaller gaps than a t2/cap4

As for wearing them as an outer layer, theyll last as well as any other light fleece, just dont expect any wind or rain resistance

The fit leans towards the slim side

It's definitely a base layer. Over a T-shirt would be fine, but as Eric said, it's a snug fit. That said, it's a great piece. I wore mine for the first time in about -10C weather over the weekend. When I got my tent set-up, I changed into the T3 hoody and bottoms. It's very warm and comfortable. I used the hood at night in my sleeping bag. I use the T2 base layers for the aerobic activities like ski touring and trail running and use the T3 for camping/sleeping etc. It would probably be too warm for me in BC.

Thanks Eric and Mike.

It sounds like the durability is there. Wow, warm at -10c. That is not as cold as it will be where I go but it is good to know that I can count on it when the temperature drops. It seems like it will work for what I am looking for. I think I'll have to get one, its just a bummer about the $20 shipping.

-10 and I had an Arc'teryx Dually Belay Parka over top – just to be clear. It's a warm base layer, but still plenty breathable/permeable. I bought the red one that went on sale.
