Just got my new sewing machine today, a Brother XL2600I, and decided to practice sewing (after initial playing around on scrap) by making a beanie.

Got the pattern from http://www.shelby.fi/kaava/403/403.php
Pattern also has the option of making a balaclava by switching out the ear band portion.

Shell is a mix of stone grey Impetus 1.0 and generic 1.1 30D ripstop; lining is Polartec PowerDry grid fleece. Weighs 1.2oz. It's nice and warm with the fleece inside.

This was a fairly easy project, and although my sewing lines aren't the prettiest, I think it turned out well for my first solo sewing project.

I'll be spending all day Sunday watching the playoffs and sewing my Karo step quilt project.

Looks great, thanks for the link to the pattern. I love to find good free patterns I can squirrel away for when I need new gear or just need something to work on.

Where did you find your powerdry fleece? I love the color and love grid fleece, unfortunately I haven't found it very often in my searching.

Thanks! The pattern is nice. It's cool that you can make a balaclava too by changing the ear band.

I got mine as a remnant from Seattle Fabrics. It's listed as regulator waffle fleece on their website. When I went to the store, I only noticed the edamame was regular grid size, I think the other colors were smaller grids, like micro grid as shown in the texture reference on their website. Actually I think the other colors that are a Lycra/ecopoly blend are regular grid, since that's what my edamame one is. Could always go back and look or call them to double check.

Although it doesn't explicitly say it's Polartec, it is exactly the same stuff, 100% identical in look and feel to my MEC Vega which is Polartec fabric. So probably just debranded for some reason.

Hey Andy,

Thanks for the pattern and the nice photos, I downloaded the pattern but it doesn't seem right.

The triangles look to small, what size should they be on paper?

Mine are about 6" tall and 5" wide, does this sound right?

I want to try and make one with down in it, any suggestions after sewing yours, when would be the best time to add the down?

I'm just making a sewn through.

Nice hat, nice job.

Maybe it should be a little longer? go further over the ears and back of neck? maybe a little further down over the eyes?

I printed mine at 115% size, that might help. The written size measurement chart may be off as a result, but that's what I did. Remember to cut a half inch or whatever seam allowance, as the pattern does not account for that.

Also, read the directions. I started cutting first only to realize I cut the rest piece wrong. I cut two identical halves, instead of folding a piece of fabric, putting the forehead side of ear piece along the fold then cutting. That way, there is no seam at the forehead.
