I know sil shelters can have a stove pipe exit installed, but I was wondering if anyone uses a canvas shelter in winter so that there is a reduced risk of burning the house down if using a stove inside

Thanks

I've never personally used a cotton canvas tent in the winter but they are very popular up here for trappers, fishermen, and mushers. Traditionally, wall tents tend to be made from heavy 10oz cotton canvas. The lightest I've found in my search so far is the Snowtrekker tent series which use 7oz canvas. But this is still extremely heavy by BPL standards. Hell, it's heavy even by traditional backpacking standards. A Snowtrekker tent weighs between 15-21 lbs (depending on the model) and you are looking at another 5-20 lbs for a stove, depending on your needs and your price points.

Personally, I'd love a canvas tent for winter. It'd be great for ice fishing trips and for trips on the snowmobile. I don't imagine I'd be too willing to drag along a 30+ pound tent/stove combination for a weekend snowshoe/ski trip. Though the thought of a cold day of skiing topped off with chilli cooked on the top of a stove in a warm tent is might tempting. And imagine the glory of bacon and eggs and a lazy coffee in the morning?

If you are interested in canvas tents I'd check out http://www.wintertrekking.com. There is lots of info on there regarding 'hot camping'. Generally, they use long plastic toboggans to carry their gear. The tent will be set-up as a 'base camp' and then trips can be made from the base camp.

Unless the intended use is for very cold temperatures (ie: northern Canada), and to be used on extended trips, a canvas tent probably wouldn't be worth it.

Just my thoughts…

Idunno, have you heard of anyone burning down a nylon tent that was designed for use with a woodstove?
