In my never-ending search for survival tools, I came across this Tool Logic Signal Fire combination whistle and firesteel with scraper.

It has a quite loud single tone whistle in the end and a firesteel flint down the side, much like the one used in their "credit card" style survival tool, and the end comes off to reveal a multi-tooth scraper. 3"x7/8"x0.199" thick and 0.34oz/9.7g.

It works for me. I wouldn't use it a primary fire starter as the flint is small, but it would be good on a neck lanyard or strapped to a knife sheath and prefect for an Altoids tin personal survival kit (PSK). I did read one review where the flint came loose. This one seems stout. The black color is a terrible choice– needs to be bright red/orange/yellow. A lanyard of reflective cord would help.

Snap your Leatherman Micra or a small Swiss Army knife on the lanyard with an LED light, and a small compass and take on the trail :)

Nice and compact. Have you started a fire with it? Please report if you do. I find that fire steels vary widely in their actual usability.

I carry an Exotac Nanostriker daily, and would not want it much smaller.

There are some You Tube reviews and it makes the basic shower of sparks. I don't want to scratch the surface to preserve it.

My usual emergency firesteel is an Exotac polySTRIKER.

I would class this as a whistle with fire starting capabilities, rather than a firesteel with a whistle. Compactness is the thing, with two less items to rattle around, tangle or lose.

I think it helps the balance of having good backup emergency tools while keeping the weight and shear number of items you hope to never use to a minimum.

Nice form factor. I'm just curious whether (and how) they justify the "5 tools in 1" claim on the package!

Yeah, I don't get the 5 function thing. At best I see whistle, firesteel and scraper with a flash signal from the firesteel being a fourth.

Got one at STP last year.
First trip out the ferocerium bar separated from the channel on the side, it was still usable but far from ergonomic. I would suggest separating the rod manually and then properly gluing it down before bringing it into the field. It is possible this design flaw is why a batch of them ended up at STP.

I didn't bother re attaching the rod and got rid of the whistle and striker. The whistle is far inferior to a Fox40.

I now keep the ferocerium bar, a small washer ground flat, and a couple pieces of tinder quick in a pocket on the inside of my pants belt (the Gerber "batman belt")
