Hello all, I live in Georgia, and hike and camp in the Northern part of the state often. I have a bit of a gear collection though, due to my love of the Alaskan backcountry. I need some suggestions on gear for an upcoming trip to the McKenzie Mountains of the Northwest Territories next week. I'm in the process of packing and then repacking, and obsessing, etc. Maybe some of you suffer in this way.
I plan to be hiking in capilene ultralight long underwear, and mostly nylon outerwear, but will have my trusty Champ pants; boots, socks, rainwear, bag, bivy/tarp, backpack, I've already decided and am comfortable. I'm unaccustomed to cold weather due to my usual environment, and thus my problem deciding what to wear for insulation. I think anything is possible as far as weather…… I have a micropuff pullover, and a Montbell thermalwrap vest, these are light, have DWR and insulation, but I've shredded a micropuff before on the rocks. I have a Gamma MX hoody coming this week, but this is untried. What I really depend on in situations like this is an Arcteryx Fission SV….tough as nails, gortex, insulated, fits well, but at 2lbs it takes up a lot of space, and may be overkill at this time of year. Which would be the better choice? Leave the trusted but heavy Fission SV home, and rely on the micropuff/Gamma MX, or bite the bullet and take the Fission?
