HMG UltaMid 2 and bug protection?

For a number of reasons I'm looking very seriously at the HMG UltaMid 2 as my next shelter purchase. However, one drawback of this mid is the lack of a good bug protection option. There is a bug net skirt that can be added by HMG. However, this appears to be non-removable which would be unnecessary weight when not needed, a real hassle in the snow, and does not provide any ground protection. Ideally I'm looking for something like the MLD InnerNet. Unfortunately, the Solo InnerNet won't fit two people, the Duo InnerNet would waste a lot of living space and the door is on the wrong side, and the Supermid InnerNet is too large. The Z-Packs HexaNet Bug Shelter is nice and long but would only be an option for solo use.

The UltaMid 2 is:

Width: 83”
Length: 107”
Height: 64”

Ideally I'd like a net tent with a cuben or sil bathtub floor, a single door on the short (83") side, and a footprint just under that of the UltaMid 2. Can anyone think of where else I might look?

Thanks for the link. I remember coming accross their products a while back when someone was selling a PyraNet 1 in Gear Swap. But I didn't know they did full custom builds of such structures. I'll contact them to see what they might be able to do, but based on the possilbe modifications to the PyraNet 3 I'd be looking at around $400 and about 1 lb. I can live with that weight considering it would be shared gear for 2 people. As for the price, how is the quality of their work?

"As for the price, how is the quality of their work?"

Can't answer that, I've never had anything from them.

Thanks Doug. I haven't seen any of their gear in person, but it looks like they do a good amount of custom work on products that I'm familiar with. Can anyone comment on the quality of their gear/work?

Josh, I'm in the middle of a conversation with Mike at HMG to discuss exactly this idea. I think an ECHO-like insert shaped and sized to fit the UltaMid would be a solid offering. This isn't really a deal breaker for me, as bugs are a minimal concern for most of the times and places I plan use this shelter. But a solid, livable bug option would go a long way to extending the value of the investment.

Ms. Claus brought me a Mega Light this year and I plan on buying a couple of these along with a polycryo groundsheet.

Hey Travis –

Give us a call next week and ask to talk to Mike. We can chat about options for you. We have a few things in the works and we are always happy to learn what you'd like and see what we can do.

Thanks for considering an HMG shelter!

You might try Oook Works over in the UK. I have a Duomid and a Gatewood Cape and will be using the S2S net mentioned above in both shelters. Looks like good coverage, room to sit up or change, and just under 3oz.

I can vouch for the excellent quality, as I have both a custom pyranet 1 and a custom pyranet 2. Good luck trying to even getting some sort of response from ookworks.

I'll try to give Mike a call this week. Extrapolating from what I know about the ECHO inserts with respect to weight and quality, I imagine we can come up with a good solution if you haven't developed one already. One of the biggest draws about the UltaMid 2 is the generous size. Having a bug option that preserved this would be great.

Thanks everyone else for the input. Good to get feedback and links to other custom gear options.

Since posting this I did end up buying an UltaMid 2. I've used it once in snow, so I haven't needed any bug protection yet. I spoke with Mike at HMG briefly about this and he indicated that he wasn't happy with the current bug skirt option and that they would be willing to work with me on designing something. Interesting to hear from others that their interest may have subsided somewhat. I know that they had been working (at least, in their heads) on a better bug option for the UltaMid line but that they haven't put anything into production. Not sure what the concern is regarding "too much weight" from the bug netting, but it IS a lot of material, especially for the Ultamid 4. I would only use something like this with two people, so it's shared weight.

There are several half-mid options that seem to fit well on one half of the UltaMid 2. That would be ideal for solo use, leaving a large area for gear, cooking, etc. But using two of those for two people isn't feasable.

I've also looked into BPWD and it seems like they would be good bet. They offer various cuben floor options including various bathtub depths, zipper configurations, etc. They also do a lot of custom modifications, which means they could orient the door properly, add mid-wall tie-outs, etc. The price seems competitive for a full featured net tent.

I spoke to John of BearPawWD and he told me I did not need any modifications to the Pyranet4 for Ultamid 4.

I'm also building a bug skirt for around the Ultamid 4 with #3 Separating Zippers Ykk and .7 oz/sqyd Ultralight Insect Netting.

Cheers

Ivan, I would love to see what you come up with. A while ago, I built a pyramid tent out of Cuben and I'm considering adding a Mosquito netting skirt as I'm planning to use it in the JMT in July. I was thinking in using plastic snaps so it would be removable but still unsure if this is the best way to go.

You have arrived the Pyranet 4 I am very happy with it. The size is perfect for the Ultamid. Must be reinforced zipper end because they receive a lot of tension,
T-zipper does not close completely, I would prefer something else.
But my Cuben Pyranet 4 is perfect for me Ultamid 4Cuben pyranet 4Pyranet 4 inside Ultamid 4

Mario, I'm going to sew #3 Separating Zipper, of 56 inches (.57 ounces) of Zpacks and add the 7 oz/sqyd Ultralight Insect Netting.
I will put the photos when I have.

Regards
