From BPL 2013 staff picks,

"this year I fatbiked wilderness trails almost unrideable on conventional bikes"

(1) Bicycles are not allowed in designated wilderness areas where I live, neither national forests nor national parks.

(2) If this was in a non-wilderness location, his riding some of that "fresh and interesting" terrain sounds as if he was intentionally going off trail. In Flagstaff, Arizona, a college town, the mountain bike park in the edge of the forest is heavily impacted from riders taking "fresh and interesting" routes.

Motorized or wheeled vehicles are not allowed in Wilderness or designated hiking trails. Bikes are allowed on trails in Forest Service land. There may be some exceptions, other wise cars or trucks could not be there. Most times they are still confined to roads. I've seen motorcycle tracks on the PCT up here in N CA. Not good.

There is a large juridical difference between (designated) Wilderness and (merely remote and little traveled) wilderness. For example, the JMT is the former but not the later. Bikes are often legal on the later, but not the former.

I agree. Depends on capital W or lower case. NF land can be considered wilderness in many places.
