Looking for suggestions here for a used goretex jacket. After hi hopes, it let water in after about 5 minutes in the shower. The seam at the collar is missing, not likely the cause: my lower back was wet, not shoulders. Otherwise the fabric in and out looks pristine.

Wash-in, spray-on, others? The collar seam will get coated with silnet.

I got this jacket for a few dollars (become a regular at your Goodwill!) and don't know its history so I'm only willing to invest another $20-ish before looking at something else. Great jacket but 5 minute shower test fail didn't instill a lot of confidence.

Leaning towards the nixwax wash-in kit (wash and coating) so I can toss in 1 or 2 other things and renew them as well.

Point of note: It's a cycling jacket so it's cut short in the front, and has a long flap in the back to cover your ass on a bike, should be good to let water drip off the back of my pack and not on my ass. Both the flap and hood roll neatly into the hems and disappear. Great pit zips too.

Wash with mild soap like Atsko Sports Wash

Spray on Atsko Permanent Water-Guard Permanent Water and Stain Repellent, let dry

Use drier, iron, or hair drier to activate. You have to get it like 150F to get the polymer to tangle.

This might work a little better than Nikwax

I tried this on eVent jacket that started leaking. Works much better afterwards.

grangers … the flurocarbons works better and lasts longer … its what dead bird and westcomb recommends

wash it, use grangers, throw it in the dryer on moderate hear

Sounds like there is a hole in the memrane. If the membrane was good and the DWR was shot you would not get wet in 5 miutes. If the membrane is bad, no amount of DWR (wash in or spray on) is going to fix it.

1. Wash with Nikwax GTX wash.
2. Rinse and in the 2nd rinse use Niwax GTX DWR treatment.
3. Dry in medium heat drier.
4. Spray shell thoroughly with Revivex.

This has worked for me better than ANYTHING else on the market.

Yes, it's a "double DWR" treatment but it works and that's what matters.

Jerry, eric and… Eric:

I put the Granger spray-on in my amazon cart (based on my un-educated guess that spray-and-heat is better than wash-in), but will look further into the other two suggestions before purchasing.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Steven: I guess it's possible that the collar seam failed and water ran down inside the jacket before wetting my lower back. The seam tape was so loose I peeled it off before testing.

But the fabric is otherwise undamaged in any way, inside and out. Maybe I should Silnet that seam and try again to be sure.

There are lighter jackets, if this is not salvageable I have $6 into it, and will use it on bike rides, where getting wet is inconvenient instead of dangerous.

OK, perhaps I'm obsessing here, but washing puts the DWR on both inside and outside surfaces of the jacket. I would much prefer not to have chemicals on the inside where they possibly could be absorbed by my skin. May not really matter but it is so hard to tell about these things and we are exposed to more than enough chemicals in our daily life.

and most of the DWR stuff ends up going down the drain where it might pollute the environment

it seems so easy to just spray it on the outside and most all of it will be used

same thing with permethrin for protection against ticks

"it seems so easy to just spray it on the outside and most all of it will be used"

…except for the aerosol that goes into your lungs.

and silver ions in "odor resistant" materials goes into the wash from clothing and into the ecosystem as well

outdoor gear is littered with gear with perceived environmental consequences … just like the constant shipping of gear back and forth on gear swap ….

to the OP … gore has a separate warranty for their products … they guarantee it for the supposed "lifetime" of the product. … you can contact them and see what they say as well
