Hi,

I've just received a mont bell UL down vest which seems good (light), and has a great fit on the chest + shoulders.. however, despite my waist being in the middle of the size range there's a lot of extra material at the bottom.

I want to add a draw cord to the hem at the bottom, which seems easy enough because it can be opened up at a vertical seam at the perfect spot and without getting into the down. This cord would come out with a toggle at the side, similar to most jackets… but I can't work out how to attach the ends by the zip?

Will I get away with just running a bartack (or two) over the hem at the zip end to sew it in place? Other jackets I have seem to have it looped around a piece of ribbon inside the hem.. but is that necessary?

The big problem with sewing bungeecord is that the sheet and elastic core isn't attached to each other, so if you only sew through it eventually you are going to pull out the elastic from the stitches. One way to solve this is to tie a knot at the end and then bartack over the cord, the knot will then be pulled against the bartacks and kept in place.

Ok, the knot on the end makes sense to help anchor it, but where do the stitches go? I can imagine two options:

1.
stitches

=====|(O) knot

So the knot is more of a stopper..

2.

stitches

====( | ) knot

Where the knot gives the stitch something more to grab onto…

I think the first makes more sense, and so does my mother (the planned sewer), but I thought I'd double check :)

Yeah, I have used your first way, when you tighten the cord it becomes so hard it's more or less impossible to sew through it so I have just gone back and fourth a couple of times over the cord

thanks for clarifying… now to find some 15d fabric for my mum to play with before sewing to get a feel for it… debating whether to sacrifice the stuff sack :)
