Yesterday, the USPS left a goody on my doorstep–a brand spanking new pack courtesy of Chris Zimmer at ZimmerBuilt. A couple of weeks ago, I sent Chris a preliminary inquiry, letting him know that I was interested in a custom pack and outlining some of the details I was interested in. Two weeks later…

ZimmerBuilt Pack

ZimmerBuilt Pack #2

Here's the tale of the tape:

– 2500 ci
– Black Dyneema X
– Aluminum Stay
– Load Lifters
– Haul Loop
– Sternum Strap
– 8"x6" internal zip pocket – away from back
– Cinch and Roll Top
– Top Webbing Strap
– 3D shaped side pockets
– Side Compression – Bungee Cord
– Front Mesh Pocket
– Orange Top pocket channels (for visibility during hunting season)
– Front Bungee Compression
– 2 Axe Loops
– 1 Hip Belt Pocket

Many of you know of Chris's superlative customer service, either by experience or reputation. My experience was no different. He was responsive, attentive and delivered an exceptional product. As I told Chris, I can't wait to get some trail miles on this baby.

"- Aluminum Stay
– Load Lifters"

I interpret stay to mean one stay. If this assumption is correct, what do the load lifters attach to?

"- 1 Hip Belt Pocket"

Why only 1?

+1 to Greg's question about the weight.

All that said, it looks like a high quality pack. I am particularly impressed by the
voluminous side pockets, which remind me a bit of the OHM. My only reservation is the mesh material, which could prove problematic for off trail travel, but I am guessing one could have their pick of materials.

Of course, I WOULD forget to include the weight. It comes in at about 27 ounces. Not the lightest pack out there, but not too shabby, particularly considering the fabric and the curved stay. In situations where my weight is minimal, my ZPacks Blast will do just fine. If I need a little more suspension (for five days plus worth of food and/or winter backpacking), this will fit the bill.

As for the stay, it's a single curved stay. And I only opted for a single hip belt pocket because I really couldn't envision needing more than one.

I have two belt pouches on my ZPacks Arc Blast, one never gets used. I got my new Zimmerbuilt pack in Xpac material, Chris talked me into it or gave me its particulars. My winter pack from him with way too much strap material weights 33 oz. over three pounds less than my old Epperson winter volume pack. I went with half mesh on the side pockets, no slant as I can't replace water bottles on the move anyway.

Not going to lie. This is one sexy pack. I am designing mine around how yours looks with some different tweeking.
