Eddie Bauer Peak XV specs

Peak XV is actually the designation given to Mount Everest on old maps before it was named Everest by the British. As far as the jacket goes it's been a few seasons since I've seen one. I recall them as being very puffy and on the heavier side of expedition jackets. Can't give you any hard specs though.

If the Peak XV jacket is a 1st Ascent jacket it should be excellent quality and have been tested by their mountainering staff. Bauer does accentuate durability so it might weight a bit more than comparable jackets of other brands.

I have their 1st Ascent down sweater (see my avatar) and it's got lots of loft with 800 fill down.

I believe try traded it off for more durable and waterproof fabrics

On another note,I am going to be in Toronto in a few weeks and will get a chance to visit MEC, besides the Cap 4 knockoffs is their anything else I should be looking at?

We bought ours last year and I emailed Eddie Bauer about fill weight…they claim 13.6 for the mens large and 10.07 for the women's medium.

I believe these numbers but I think the coat is designed to be overstuffed compared to most other down coats. There are lighter garments out there with comparable loft in terms of measured inches but the loft in the peak is stiffer and, combined with the burly shell fabric, holds up to a cold wind much better.

We've used ours hanging out on windy Montana ridge lines while we eat lunch and get ready to ski down etc. It also has a lot of down in the hood and arms while some other coats concentrate loft (and even only have baffles) in the core.

It isn't a particularly light coat (I believe the claimed weight of around 2.5 lbs) and it doesn't pack down small. At some point i'd like to try a 20 oz or so baffled jacket but the peak is a great piece for mid winter use especially if bought on sale. It is probably more fair to compare it to an ultralight parka + a shell sized to fit over it.

the T2/T3 are the thing to buy at MEC … their alpine lite packs are considered quite good for climbing, and they have other MEC branded stuff like their down and primaloft sweaters that are as good as anyone elses …

if you see something you like you can always call em now, order it to be shipped to the TO store … try it on right on the spot, and if doesnt fit return it …

the MEC vegas are on sale now for 45$ of course … remember theres 30 days price protection and an unlimited return policy

theres a reason why jackets that are often used in the Arctic/Antarctic have thick shells … its not that companies like Canada Goose want to make you heavy weight … it because there is a significant amount of compression using UL fabrics in very windy conditions

its also a reason why certain hardshells are made quite stiff … not because they dont believe in UL … but simply because a stiff (and relatively heavy) shell will help keep the wind off your body in high wind situations …

remember that just because some UL windshirt is "windproof" doesnt mean you wont get cold from high winds pressing the shell against the body and the cooling effect or the wind running over it sapping away the heat

Thanks Ryan, 13.6oz sounds right for the amount of down, I did email EB support did not here back.
I will compare it some the loft to other down jackets we have and see how it fares.

I tried on the Neutrino Plus years ago and really liked it, when I was looking for a mid weight parka a while back it was a close completion between it and the MB Permafrost, but I got the latter as got it for 100$ cheaper. It gets down to negative 15f in my neck of woods (negative 4f tonight) so the Peak xv may come in handy.

The Neutrino Plus does look very nice indeed.

Yeah, I've been drooling over the Neutrino Plus for a few years now and I bought the trigger when I saw it on sale recently (not the usual deep discount but I'm employed again…). Still at that price the Peak XV is definitely a nice bargain, and for someone who gets cold easily and doesn't have much experience in the snow I wouldn't mind the extra safety margin. Unfortunately only large sizes left by the time I saw this post.

Oh well, off to find a Rab infinity or neutrino on deep discount so I can convince the lady to come experience a winter wonderland!

The Peak xv at that price is a no brainer, will report back in a few days about it.

i would order two weeks before your trip if you want to ship to the store … store to store shipping can actually be slower than store to home for some reason

its still riskless as if it doesnt arrive in time, you can simply ask for a refund on yr card once it gets there

So the Peak XV arrived yesterday, it weighs 1080g in XL (on cheapo kitchen sale) that's 38oz in Dollars :-)

I don't want to comment too much on it until I use it in anger next weekend, but from a first look the build quality is top notch and has very good feature set.

One thing is that the hand warmer pockets only have down on the front on not the back (have seen this in similar Parkas) it does not in a way take away from my impression of it. I am thinking this parka will manly see use below 5-10f.

it really feels like putting on a sleeping bag doesn't it? man it's so warm. i put mine on when i walked my dogs the other night, when it was sleeting, and all i had on was a t shirt. temps were in the high teens and i was PLENTY warm. did you go blue or black?

it was minus 2F at my place this morning but did not get a chance to try it out.

btw. mine has 2 huge water bottle pockets sewn onto the inside – a feature that owners of the older parka had complained was missing. :D

those inside pockets will be very useful this winter :-)

that's where my new boiled wool mitts will be hanging out :D
