I found a two year old esbit tab still wrapped in its foil package so I decided to test it out. I put 16oz of cold water in a SnowPeak Trek 700 and then set it on the BPL Firelite esbit stove. It took 10 minutes for the water to come to a full boil and to my excitement it continued to burn for another 10 minutes.
Next, in the first ten minutes while waiting for the water to boil I had a citronella candle burning and was being eaten alive, as soon as it began to boil I ran inside and grabbed my 3M ultrathon lotion and never had another bite the next ten minutes.
I also learned that 16oz of beer taste much better than the standard 12oz.

I remember reading somewhere (Backpacker Magazine maybe?) that citronella candles are next to worthless.
I remember watching mosquitos biting me with a citronella candle between my legs and confirm BP magazines findings. Ben, what do you use?
100% DEET on my person, and Permethrin on my clothing and gear. Where skeeters are numerous and aggressive (e.g. Wind Rivers, WY) — I'll still suffer a few bites, but I know the chemicals have saved me from tons more bites otherwise.
Yes, citronella candles next to worthless. Also the fumes from coils are dangerous to your health.

Speaking of those green coils, growing up in Asia, I think everybody lit those things at night — indoors! We certainly did — until papa finally broke down and bought air conditioners for the house. Believe me, you would burn coils too if your choices were (1) being eaten alive by mosquitoes that night or (2) worrying about cancer 40 years in the future. :)
