My nephew and his wife just moved to Birmingham, AL. They are both experienced in the outdoors — backpacking, kayaking, rock climbing, etc — and in good physical shape. Does anyone have any suggestions for outstanding outing recreation I should point out to them?

The Sipsey Wilderness (NE of Birmingham) is very popular.

The Pinhoti Trail and Mt. Cheaha area east of Birmingham are worthy as well. Surprisingly rugged terrain.

The Walls of Jericho north of Huntsville is a shorter hike but also very nice.

If they're willing to travel a bit further afield, the south Cumberlands in Tennessee (Savage Gulf, Fiery Gizzard etc.) are also wonderful places to backpack.

John,

Thanks. I have passed your comments along. They were not yet aware of some of your suggestions.

Anyone else have any suggestions?
