My wife is looking for mid-weight insulating tops with a wide scoop neck that she can use under business attire. What have you ladies found that might fit the bill?

She is always cold–her comfort setpoint is about 10 degrees warmer than everyone else in the office and about 20 degrees warmer than mine! She would like to find something just a bit heavier than a silk-weight Capilene 1, perhaps in the Capilene 2 thickness. It will be layered under an opaque blouse, typically long-sleeved.

The biggest challenge is finding tops that have a scoop neck rather than a crew neck.

Any suggestions?

If you look through their women's product lines, most of them have tops with larger scoop necks. I have one from arcteryx that I like, and I've seen several Patagonia merino items with larger necks.

Curtis, how low is the scooping your wife is looking for? Maybe taking the thermal tops to a seamster/ seamstress?
Also, the wider the scooping, the colder your wife will be..

She's not very demonstrative. I think that anything wider than a crew neck will be fine. I guess it never occurred to me to have it altered. How hard is that to do?

Hi Curtis,
Altering the scoop is not very difficult, but it depends on the fabric of the shirt. Any sewing machine that has a "stretch" stitch should do the job.

Have you checked titlenine.com or athleta.com?

My wife seems to get one of those catalogs in the mail every other day. They have a lot of yoga-inspired and workout clothes but seem to have a high emphasis on fashion.

REI has silk underwear that might work. My sister used to wear it as a vice-principal in San Francisco.

The silk base layers typically have a good neck, but the Patagonias just a bit too lightweight. I'll check the REI silks.

I looked at the Icebreakers and found a perfect one if only it didn't have a pattern:

Probably your link is just too long – ancient software here has always had problems with long URLs.

Have her check out Winter Silks website. They have scoop neck silk tops to wear underneath clothes…all sorts of silk clothing. Silk is very warm, and comes in several layer levels…light, midweight, heavy.
