Received a PM re ID of U-Line bag sealer.
BPL no longer lets me reply to PMs, but logs me out automatically instead.
Weary of contacting BPL about issues at this point.
The ULINE product is named "8" Impulse Sealer with Cutter," Product # H-161, purchased ca. 2004
The bags are #S-951, 6×6" 2 mil poly bags, 1000 to a box
and
S-5387, 2×3", 1 mil poly bag, 1000 to a box and are used to hold anything that would thicken the food mix and impede simmering/rehydration. The little bags are sealed and go into the larger ones. They could be a tad bigger, so long as fit into the larger bags.
Product is at: http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/H-161/Poly-Bag-Sealers/8-Impulse-Sealer-with-Cutter
It was $99 when purchased, costs #134 now. For the amount of food it has sealed, it was worth it.
Sidenote: Found out Ziplock bags are not air tight when mailing out map packets for the trail club. The maps are sealed tightly in a freezer or storage Ziplock (the heavier ones). By the short time the bags go into the mailing envelope, they have taken on air, (they take on the air, but it can't be pressed out when the bags are sealed) and increase the thickness of the parcel to require a higher mailing rate. One of life's little annoyances. Won't say how it was addressed, but the indication is that the odor of food in one of these bags will be readily detected by wildlife.
The PM also said, "ziplock baggies don't keep things very fresh." Another reason to justify the cost of the ULine sealer.
