Is there any sort of base layer (reasonably snug but not compression!) that works well to warm the thighs? That ends at the knee? Seems "cold thighs" is what mostly wakes me at night.

My supposedly boot length Smartwool pants only go to mid-calf then ride up in use to only cover from waist to below my knees, and I'm below average height.

Consider having some fleece chaps made on a rain chap pattern, or just chop some fleece pants into a similar shape.

That's actually a grand idea, that would be perfect, provided they were snug enough not to ride up.

In deep winter, I sleep with a hot water bottle between my legs to heat my femoral artery. Works all night!

Chop the fleece pants and put in a tube hem and a soft lightweight drawstring on the bottoms.

Arcteryx phase sv boot cut.
Pricey, but warm, wicking, and 5oz.

Polartec Power Stretch material is warm, snug (but not tight) and stretches. I have pants, tops, head caps, and more, all from EMS and love them. If you know someone who has a sewing machine, or are willing to bring it to a seamstress, you can shorten the pant to exactly the length you want.

There are many companies that offer a PPS pant:

1) EMS
2)Mountain Hardwear
3) Cloudveil
4) Marmot

+1 on Power Stretch for pajamas.

You could alter a pair of Power Dry (like R1) long johns. You can find the military version cheap at times. I would go with the full length and be warm all over: what goes to your feet has to return through your thighs. Drop down a size for the military version.

Yer femoral arteries lie on the inside of your thighs. Eskimos used to wear knee-length fur "shorts" over their fur pants to protect this area.

I recommend knee-length medium or polar weight cut off long john pants for this. Also wear them over your regular long johns in bitter weather. Makes a difference you will like.
