well after seeing some people i know with the infamous JOGR ultralight backpacking stove that you can pick up for ~6$ …. reviewed here … i decided i just had to order an el cheapo stove from the homeland

http://sectionhiker.com/ultralight-and-inexpensive-backpacking-canister-camp-stove/

however i decided to pick up the one below … which looks like more of a snow peak/kovea copy though not in titanium of course … for 11$ shipped

http://dx.com/p/ultra-mini-portable-outdoor-metal-gas-stove-with-a-case-2-ag3-52063

– work just fine on my optimus/jetboil canisters
– weights 3.5 oz by itself, 4.25oz with case
– seems to be pretty solid, brass thread, oring seems fine
– the piezo is finicky, it may or may not work … however i can probably take it off saving some weight
– good temperature control, simmers fine
– pot supports are stable
– it took a month to arrive from the shipping date … via china post

full blast … on a nearly empty cartridge …

on a very low simmer …

at a moderate level …

well see how well it works in squamish over the mild winter/spring … will it fail horribly, or will it work just fine?

for normal use around and above freezing, which is generally where you use upright canisters, i suspect itll work just fine … hmmmm

on a side note, perhaps its time Mr. Caffin did a review on some of these 6-12$ stoves … an update to his 2009 one … if they work fine for most walkers out there, thats lowers the barriers to entry for new folks …

I have also used this same stove fairly extensively over the past year. Ordered through Amazon for even less, around $7 shipped from China at the time. Took about a month to arrive.

I wanted to remove the piezo as well since it was hit or miss and I didn't need it. Unfortunately it's structural and keeps the top assembly stable. It hasn't been as stable since removing and replacing it.

Otherwise, I like it and my observations echo yours. It doesn't feel crude for the price. I don't feel like I'd get a whole lot more for a canister stove with a higher price.
