Hi,

I've just killed my Altra Lone Peak 1.5s and need something new. I don't have a problem with the Lone Peaks for hiking, but I'm looking to go a little more minimal to allow for a bit more feel while trail running.

Superiors seemed like the obvious choice, and I can currently pick them up pretty cheap on sale. However, the Lone Peaks didn't go quite as far as I would have liked and I'm worried about the durability on the Altras (especially those silly looking strings on the sides).

Fishing around for other options, I found the Trailroc 235s. They look durable enough, but they're a bit more pricy.. Also, I'm not quite sure I believe shoefitr that they fit as wide as Altra.

Any comments on either of these or any other recommendations for zero drop trail runners with a wide toe box and 10-15mm of support?

I have a pair of the Altra Superiors. Picked them up in July. Overall I love the shoes. I too wear the Lone Peak 1.5s, and the Superiors are very similar, just stripped down. I may even like them more than the 1.5s, but I feel like they are definitely less durable, mostly because of the mesh uppers. I had one of the strings on the side come unattached, a hole at the end of the toe box, and ripped one side of the loop off on the heal. None of this really affected the performance of the shoes, just sort of obnoxious. I ended up snipping the string off that was hanging and didn't really notice a difference. They've mostly been my everyday shoes, and I take them on hikes from time to time, but usually reach for my Lone Peaks. When they totally bite the dust, I'll probably pick up another pair though.

The 235s are a lot lower and more flexible than the Altras. Durability wise they're a bit better than average in the realm of comparable shoes.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Steve; why the preference for the lone peaks for hiking? greater durability or just like the added protection/support?

David; have you tried both to say how the fit compares?

Probably leaning toward the Superiors right now based on price, but keen to hear more about the 235s as I think they could definitely make an appearance in the future :)

Just curious… for those that use the Altra's, specifically the LP1.5's, what do you think of the traction as far as wet rocks & roots?

I have the trailroc 150, and I was disappointed with the narrow toebox. Otherwise an excellent shoe. Love the sole, and seems very durable so far. Excellent construction.

It might be that they have narrowed the last of the 150 compared to the other trailroc shoes, inkluding the 235. I was surprised by how narrow they were compared to my bare-x 150s. I thought they had the same last, but they don't.

I would describe the lone peaks on wet rock as average, nothing special, probably worse than my trail gloves, which is not a good benchmark. Dry they are quite good, but moisture is definitely their enemy.

I currently own a pair of 235s. I've spent a lot of time in our local mtn shop contemplating Lone Peaks, but never bought them because the heel cup is too loose for me. The Trailrocs certainly have a narrower heel cup, and probably a somewhat narrower forefoot as well.

@Lachlan Mostly the extra support, padding, and toe protection. I guess it eases mind as well. The Superiors just seem more fragile in a technical/rocky setting. On a well maintained trail I wouldn't worry so much.

@Stick
I have noticed that they don't handle wet rocks as well as my Inov8 Roclite 295s did. But it hasn't really been an issue for me. The good far out weighs the bad in my experience.
