it used to be that when I hit "Recent Posts", posts that I've already read are shown grayed out, so I know not to read it again

recently, it stopped doing this, posts I've read are the same as posts I haven't read

I wonder if I've done something to my PC or the site code has been changed

I hate computer questions like this because they can be impossible to resolve : )

Sounds like your browser app to me.

Upgrade or change browsers or settings lately? Clearing your history on closing?

I turned off UAC, installed some software, turned UAC back on, but I think it worked after that

McAfee is always installing new virus software – I mean anti-virus software : ) – maybe that has something to do with it

I hate debugging problems like this. I hate Vista. I hate IE7. I hate switching over to any alternatives even more.

Hi Jerry

Especially when you don't give the OS or browser!

Cheers

Agree with Dale; graying or otherwise displaying "visited" links differently is the job of your web browser.* Since the browser can only determine this by comparing the link to what's in its history file, clearing your history will make all links show up "not-visited" again.

* The website can say "please use this style for visited links", but it's still the browser's job to figure out which links are "visited".

"Especially when you don't give the OS or browser!"

The clue is – "I hate Vista. I hate IE7."

Those are the OS and browser I use

"Try Chrome."

"I hate Vista. I hate IE7. I hate switching over to any alternatives even more."

Although I have thought about switching to Linux. I used to use Unix all the time. It has an advantage that they're not changing it all the time. There's no "they" that benefits from changing it.

"recently, it stopped doing this, posts I've read are the same as posts I haven't read"

Perhaps there's a new AI on the site, and judging from a lot of your responses, the AI just assumes you didn't really read the initial post in the first place, so it doesn't grey it out.

Just a guess. Could be something else entirely…..

"I hate switching over to any alternatives even more."

You must be a hoot of a date:

"I hate my car worse than scurvy!"

"Then buy a new car."

"I hate buying cars."

"Check please."

I fooled around with "F12 development tools" a bit, but I couldn't find any settings that made any difference. I restarted IE and my PC a number of times but made no difference.

Then, all of a sudden it started working again – posts I've read are grayed out. I swear I made no setting change between not working and working.

Maybe I made a setting change, then restarted IE, and then it started working, but that's not what I remember.

Or maybe they changed something at backpackinglight.com. At one point script error reporting was enabled and I noticed lots of script errors here, but not on other sites.

I could try fooling with F12 development tool settings again and try to get it to fail again

This proves that if you have enough monkeys typing, eventually one will type the bible : )

Okay very weird – it stopped graying out posts or threads that have been read for several days, then it started working again. I didn't do anything at transition – read a post it didn't work, read another one and now it's working.

All of the posts I read when it wasn't working are now grayed out, so it's a display problem, not a problem with recording that something was read.

Fortunately it doesn't really matter so this is just a mystery to ponder…
