I have a cuben mid (HMG Ultamid 2). I want to build a beak to attach to the front that would extend all the way to ground on both sides: It would have two purposes:
1. Fire: I mostly wilderness hike in northern Canada and I use open fires to cook, stay warm and dry clothes. During shoulder seasons they are necessary and the greatest pleasure of a cold trip Rain is common; on a recent trip it rained 7 of 11 days with temperatures of 2C. The threat of gear damage from flankers requires that I keep the fire a safe distance from my tent. I have been using a tarp made of made of HomeGuard house wrap (tyvek type material) as its low cost allows it to be easily replaced when burned or otherwise damaged. It is inefficient to set up both a tarp and tent. By attaching the tarpbeak to the front of the mid, it would keep the fire a safe distance from the tent while allowing me to have one setup.
2. Titanium Stove: In winter plan to use a titanium wood stove under the beaktarp with a funnel outlet because I don't want to cut a pipe outlet in my cuben tent or even have fire anywhere near the tent for that matter. I anticipate incorporating doors in front of the beak to keep heat inside in the winter. Picture a pyramind tent with its doors wide open under a beak which extends from the peak out from the front with a ridge line, two sides down to the ground and a vertical front face with a zippered door.
I have searched but have not found anyone who has made such a beak. I realize weight considerations for most may prohibit this approach. For me I envision a nice cuben tent with a cheap tyvek beackporchvestibule.
I have just bought a sewing machine and plan to start soon and was hoping to find others who have done a similar thing but without luck.
