The weak point of my typical lightweight hiking shoes (regardless of brand) is the mesh. It often snags and tears on the first trip out and things only get worse on subsequent trips. The mesh appears to made of soft, easily snagged, polyester.

Do you know of a shoe that uses a harder, more durable mesh or other synthetic for the uppers? I'm thinking something like Leno mesh would work better. Heck, simply making the uppers out of uncoated 1.9 ounce ripstop would be an improvement.

I'm only interested in shoes that are 100% synthetic.

My old Inov8 roclite 315s had a stiff-ish mesh on them (like bug screen for windows) but it was brittle and eventually broke/tore at the flex point above my big toes. The slit slowly grew after forming but probably could have been secured with a few hand stitches and seam grip. Beyond that, the stiffer mesh was pretty resilient to desert scrub. I think the new trail-rocs (Red 245s, not the blue ones) have a finer mesh that is stiffer and less snag prone than the standard poly mesh uppers.

Talk to Roger Caffin, he wears light shoes and has to deal with super nasty scrub over in Aus.

some mesh can be quite durable …

for example the mesh on my TNF hedgehogs are pretty strong … compared my terrocs which arent bad but will get holes

the trick with any wear on the mesh is to cover it with seam grip once a wear spot appears … even for leather shoes or youll get holes in good time

UL shoes make compromises with durability … thats the price you pay for the light weight

;)
