I am looking for a down jacket with a hood but there are some specifics. I am 6'5" with a long torso so I need a jacket in a Tall or with long arms (37/38") and a long torso (30"). I am also about 240# and want to layer it over my Pat R2 so it will probably have to be an XL or XXL depending. I would like something in the 4oz of down range as I don't want anything too thin that doesn't provide enough warmth or too thick. Also, I am trying to keep it around $100 or less so it doesn't have to be 800 fill either but I would like the jacket to be minimal and light (~1#). Thanks.

Perhaps indicating whether those 4 oz. is based on 800 FP or lower because 4 oz. down of 800 FP is not equal to 4oz. of 600 FP.

I have the new backcountry.com anorak, hood, 850 fill, Pierre quantum, 7.5oz in medium, I paid $110 New.

You're asking a lot on that budget… Most likely you'll have to give up on down amount ($100 buys you 2oz of +800fp usually, at best).

If you can go over your weight limit, geartrade.com has a Norrona Lyngen jacket for $130 in excellent condition. Weighs 24oz but is XXL and very puffy/warm looking.

Otherwise you'll be limited to this year's Costco Special (I think it's a CK down jacket) which will be affordable but skimpy on the down.

Maybe the GoLite Demaree (4.2oz of down, 1lb total in medium) but it's sold out in XXL. Also the Roan is available but a bit heavier and warmer.

Beyond that you'll have to do some REI garage sale gambling to find something that'll fit your criteria. Good luck!

I don't see the BC one but then again I want a jacket and not an anorak. 650 fill is fine with me. 4oz is about the right loft i want and there is not a huge difference between 800 and 650. I thought the Costco one didn't have a hood? Maybe Uniqlo?

http://tinyurl.com/l4yuqms

•600-fill power down insulation provides superior warmth
•Water resistant shell
•Fully lined three-piece hood
•Full zipper closure
•Partial elastic cuffs seal out cold
•Two front pockets with hidden snap
•Interior vertical welt pocket with hook and loop closure
•TEMPERATURE RATING – WARMEST: -25° to +5° Fahrenheit

To clarify Ken's post about the temp rating of the Land's End

"All our ratings are based on wearing typical cool weather clothing, including a cotton turtleneck, wool sweater and jeans."

But that probably is your best bet.

As for the hood of the costco, I don't expect many jackets in the $100 range to have stellar hoods. Maybe that one was particularly terrible though.

The Uniqlo has 2-3 oz of down at best. The sizing, price and weight are right though. Lands End or Cabelas will be ur best shot at that price range but will be well over a pound I think.

Well, you would need only ± 0,85 oz. more of that down according to my estimates which is quite a big difference (± 21 %).

Against the down, yes but now when taking into the whole jacket weight.

Bitterroot on sale or used is the best bet. Get good quality, buy once buy right.
