Hi folks. I'm putting together my first bc ski touring kit and am wondering if I'd be crazy to use my fizan compact poles for skiing (with snow baskets). I'm not that big, and I'm also not an agressive skiier, but I dont want to be stupid, either. Anyone doing this?

I'm planning to do logging roads, overnighters in varied (pnw) terrain- eventually I'd like to some some mountaineering, but for now, I'll probably be in a lot of rolling stuff. For the rest of my kit, I'm riding tlt5s, dynafits and madshus annum skis. Thanks for your help!

For backcountry skiing shouldnt you use poles that can double as an avalanche probe?

I have 3 pr Fizan compact Ul poles, but I wouldnt use them to ski. Maybe you are easier on your ski poles than I am.

I wouldn't say you were crazy but I'd suggest you be prepared for breakage. I've done a fair amount of backcountry touring and I'd say ski poles take a lot more abuse than hiking poles do, (I've bent a few) and they are a more essential part of your gear. Walking without poles is not a problem – skiing without poles is a different story. I'd stick with poles made for skiing. If you want to minimize your investment for now, just get some old cross-country poles to start with.

Thanks for the input. I'll definitely be carrying a probe, but there are probes separate from poles. Do most folks buy one probe pole and one non-probe, or do you carry separate probes?

The probe poles are pretty much worthless as probes because of the taper and the fittings for adjusting length. If you need a probe carry a probe, forget the probe poles.
